The value of the incense industry in India is at present estimated at Rs. 2,000 Crores and is concentrated mostly in the state of Karnataka. Out of this, 20% is the premium agarbatti segment while remaining 80% is the regular agarbatti. Tripura supplies approximately 25,000 MT of raw bamboo sticks that accounts for 60% of the total raw sticks requirement for agarbatti production. Currently the production is confined to the lower end of value chain where the artisans earn only Rs 5- 6 per kg of raw sticks inclusive of the cost of bamboo.
There is a huge opportunity to make a paradigm shift from production of raw sticks to making rolled sticks and polished sticks, which can maximize returns to the artisans. Value creation in production of rolled sticks leads to a marked increase in earning potential from current levels of Rs 7 to Rs 40 per Kg
TBM has a mandate to convert 10% of stick capacity in the state to production of rolled sticks thereby achieving a level of 2000 MTs of rolled stick per annum. Given the important advantages of a large population engaged in the sector and ready availability of all required raw materials including bamboo, charcoal and jiget, a concerted effort will lead to establishing Tripura as the incense hub.
