In Tripura, the most prominent species of Bamboo is Mellocana baccifera (Muli) , the one which is generally used for incense stick manufacture. Other species of bamboo, which are important for the manufacture of various value added products such as Bambusa tulda (Mirtinga), Bambusa polymorpha (Bhaura), Schizostachym dullooa (Dolu), Bambusa balcooa (Barak, Barua) are available at present only in isolated pockets. The requirement of these species is spread across the state, around the clusters, which are being identified for the manufacture of various bamboo items. To ensure availability of these species of bamboo in sustainable manner, TBM has a mandate for resource generation of the above species through promotion of homestead planting in an area of 5,000 hectares, covering about 40,000 households. The focus is also on generation of planting material through VPC (Vegetative Propagation Center) and introduction of tissue culture.
